5 Ingredient Slow Cooker Shredded Chicken
This 5 Ingredient Slow Cooker Shredded Chicken recipe is your go-to solution for perfectly cooked chicken that’s versatile enough for any meal. Just set it, forget it, and enjoy tender, flavorful chicken ready to add to your favorite dishes!
Shredded chicken is a staple in my kitchen as it’s used in so many dishes throughout the week. Its mild flavor and texture make it easy to add to salads, wraps, tacos, and more while absorbing the flavors of spices and sauces it’s paired with!
While there are many ways to make shredded chicken, in my home kitchen, I’ve found that using a slow cooker to make shredded chicken is the best way to cook it because it’s incredibly easy, it’s hands off and gives the best results!
Here’s why: You simply lay chicken breasts in the slow cooker and add seasonings. Then, pour in some chicken broth for moisture. The slow cooker does all the work, gently cooking the chicken on low heat for 4-6 hours or on high for 3-4 hours. This slow process ensures the chicken is tender, juicy, and infused with flavor, making it fall apart easily for shredding. Plus, there’s minimal effort and clean-up involved, making it perfect for a busy life.
This is my favorite Slow Cooker! I’ve had it for over 15 years and use it weekly in my kitchen. It’s a must for those busy weeknights when you want a delicious meal but are short on time.
Tender, Juicy, Slow Cooked Chicken
- Just season, set the slow cooker and let it work its magic for perfectly tender chicken.
- The slow cooking process locks in moisture, ensuring juicy chicken in every bite.
- From salads to tacos, this chicken can be the star of countless creative and delicious dishes.
- Make a large batch all at once and freeze for later for quick meal options.
Ingredients You’ll Need (only 5!)
- Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast – Easily shreds after slow cooking and absorbs any flavor you add to it.
- Salt – Enhances the natural flavors of the chicken and helps to tenderize it during the cooking process.
- Pepper – Adds a subtle heat and depth of flavor.
- Garlic Powder – Infuses the chicken with a savory, aromatic, and mild garlic flavor.
- Low Sodium Chicken Broth – Always use a low sodium broth so you can control the amount of salt in the recipe.
How To Make Shredded Chicken In The Slow Cooker
Prepare the chicken breast: Trim any excess fat off of the chicken breast. Pat dry on both sides with paper towels and place the chicken at the bottom of the slow cooker.
Season chicken: Evenly sprinkle the chicken with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Pour the chicken broth over the seasoned chicken breasts.
Cover and cook: Place the lid on the top and cook on LOW for 4-6 hours or HIGH for 3-4 hours or until the chicken breast is cooked through to an internal temperature of 165F.
Shred the chicken: Remove the chicken breast from the slow cooker and shred it with two forks, or in a stand mixer with the paddle attachment.
Use or freeze: Serve immediately in your favorite dish, or store in the fridge or freezer for later. Enjoy!
Helpful Slow Cooking Tips
- Always start with thawed chicken breasts to ensure even cooking and optimal texture.
- Layer the chicken flat in the slow cooker to promote uniform cooking and seasoning distribution.
- If the chicken seems dry, add a bit more broth to keep it moist throughout the cooking process.
- Shred the chicken while it’s warm for easier handling and better absorption of flavors.
Flavor Variations and Substitutions
- Add a dash of smoked paprika or cayenne pepper for a smoky, spicy kick.
- Introduce a tangy note by mixing a tablespoon of balsamic vinegar into the broth.
- Use boneless chicken thighs instead of breasts for a richer chicken flavor.
- Stir in a spoonful of honey or brown sugar to the broth for a hint of sweetness.
- Create a barbecue-style chicken by adding your favorite BBQ sauce during the last hour of cooking.
