Hi, I’m Laney!

Laney Schwartz is a recipe developer, food educator, and former first-grade teacher who helps everyday home cooks feel confident in the kitchen.
With a background in education and years of hands-on recipe development, Laney specializes in creating approachable, reliable recipes designed for real life, busy weeknights and family dinners without the stress. Her cooking style emphasizes clear instructions (you know, like a first grade teacher), simple ingredients, and delicious food without the complexity.
Before working in food full time, Laney spent years in the classroom, where she developed a deep understanding of how people learn. That teaching foundation directly informs her work as a recipe developer: breaking down techniques step by step, anticipating common questions, and writing recipes that are easy to follow for cooks of all skill levels.
Laney has developed hundreds of original recipes and cooking resources that reach hundreds of thousands of home cooks through her website and social platforms. Her work focuses on practical, repeatable meals that support everyday life rather than trends that don’t last. She is especially known for weeknight dinner recipes that balance simplicity with comfort and flavor.
She is a graduate of the University of Michigan, where she played collegiate soccer. An experience that shaped her disciplined, detail-oriented approach to recipe testing and development.
Laney grew up on the east coast, in Maryland and currently lives in Los Angeles with her husband, their two daughters, and their two wiener dogs. Outside the kitchen, she enjoys lifting weights, long walks, rainy days, sushi date nights, and baking banana bread for anyone who comes over.
At the core of Laney’s work is a simple belief that cooking should feel doable, empowering, and grounded in real life. Her goal is not perfection, but confidence, helping people trust themselves in the kitchen and enjoy the food they make. Learn more about Life is but a Dish here!
